To The Sea (Poetry)
24th February 2013
I can feel your power even at this distance —
tugging at my restless salt-blood tides —
I can’t escape that flood so overwhelming
it washes — sends cool thrills through my insides.
I hear your song — your ragged rocking rhythms
fill my head — recall each lyric wave
rolling — pouring out its subtle echo
to every shell and haunted ocean cave.
I know your elemental water language —
no need for teaching fish the way to swim —
such knowledge flows invisible as breathing —
the essence of you permeates my skin.
Your brine-sharp breeze sings descant with reminders —
sad choruses that chill — become an ache
of wanting — needing to obey that instinct
or chance the homesick heart will slow and break.
My soul has fins and flicks its tail — impatient —
shrugs off disguise this life demands I wear
while evolution lures and spins its theory
’til crystal tears drip from my seaweed hair.
tugging at my restless salt-blood tides —
