Trinkets (Poetry)
20th July 2011
Trinkets — a set of small trinks.
Gathered together — a collection of random items
that seem at first glance to be
inconsequential things — of no importance or great
value in themselves to anyone but the owner
of these objects who has been attracted
to them — simply likes looking at them — sees in them
more than an assembly of cheap materials —
they feed the imagination —
are symbols associated with people — places — dreams
and ideals — they have a significance beyond
their obvious gift shop cuteness or mere
passing fascination.
Worth nothing — or next-to-nothing
they are the antithesis of antiques —
not purchased as investment — no serious
thought to profit from the deal
other than the quiet joy of observation — remembering
connections — and a real sense of satisfaction felt
when touching and holding them — only that —
a simple childlike delight
in cheap things that are hoarded —
kept safe — then handed down
through families — the alchemy of sentiment
turning them into unintended treasure.
