Unattainable (Poetry)

31st March 2019
Handsome in the supermarket
he glanced across the aisle
youth his first class ticket
and a heart-throb of a smile

A man describing beautiful
attached to someone fair
his easy manner dutiful
he flashed his status there

And children trailed in single file
a boy just like his dad
a daughter, too — a poster child
the prettiest they had

The perfect family in size
his partner glowed serene
as any woman with a prize
their baby-bump between

So near yet unattainable
I sighed and walked away
such fancies unsustainable
for there’d be hell to pay
