Unction (Poetry)

20th May 2012
After a night’s tossing in a sea of clammy sheets
we woke to rain —
the morning light sullen — even in its disdain
for all it touched
sky watered earth — steady with its unction — turned air sweet
we breathed again —
freed from that sly press of heat that clung — sapped and sucked.

Coolness soaked right through — entered every pore — flesh
                                 and leaf
a drug absorbed
in quiet ecstacy — some blissful moments soared
while healing balm
spread over skin and petal — a natural relief
found true accord —
balanced need — a passive state conscious of its calm.

A slight breeze grew fretful — undecided how to blow —
how hard — which way
and chivvied trees at random — nudged at cloud’s dull grey
to move along
while fine nets of drizzle swirled — puffed wet — seemed loathe
                                 to go
set for the day...
and we — still drowsy from the night — lay listening on.
