Unexpected Guests (Poetry)

24th December 2023
All uninvited
the three of us crept
into the stable
where the infant slept
our hearts filled with awe

Damp eyes all around
we gazed three on three
where Mary sat calm
and smiled graciously
while Joseph looked down

Like a man in thrall
held fast by a dream
a glow in the sky
lit soft the rough stall
no word of a lie

For where else on earth
would God’s own true son
think best for his birth? —
just this humble one
hence miracles come ...

The three of us saw
in silence we wept
we offered our gifts
departed and kept
Herod in the dark
