Unhatched (Poetry)
24th December 2023
There’s a man in an egg
laid by a dark bird
who sits in a tree
on the edge of the world
That bird has no name
that can ever be said
for it carries a curse
set to stain the sky red
The bird sings one note
as it broods the man-chick
safely trapped in a shell
umpteen billion years thick
Thus the man’s never hatched
in this version of life
there’s no snake in the grass
or God-plucked rib-bone wife
It’s a vision unmatched
with no evil released
war banned from the garden
love suffers in peace
laid by a dark bird
who sits in a tree
on the edge of the world
That bird has no name
that can ever be said
for it carries a curse
set to stain the sky red
The bird sings one note
as it broods the man-chick
safely trapped in a shell
umpteen billion years thick
Thus the man’s never hatched
in this version of life
there’s no snake in the grass
or God-plucked rib-bone wife
It’s a vision unmatched
with no evil released
war banned from the garden
love suffers in peace
