Unravelling (Poetry)

08th December 2019
She doesn’t want her life to end
but she’s loathe to go on living
she’s broken and it’s hard to mend
a body with no give in

The world has taken a strange turn
and love’s in short supply
hopes long-cherished crash and burn
and worry clouds the eye

A chill north wind bites through the flesh
no one remembers summer
nothing matters more or less
the dumbest laws get dumber

Too few can see and most won’t look
too self-involved to care
what prophesies leak from the book
whose blood drips down the stair

She isn’t used to dying yet
the angel’s late appearing
she nurses every small regret
the end of all things nearing

What could have been’s been left too late
the map has lost its marker
upon the fence the foolish wait
and watch the days grow darker

The frozen tundra of the mind
makes living hard and slow
no path ahead, no prints behind
words pile like drifting snow

The mountain looms above the mist
the soul resumes its travels
she finds the slope the sun has kissed
life’s mystery unravels
