Vehicle (Poetry)

She was a taxi
ferrying the child
therefore essential
to the scheme of things
a key component

She was the focus
for once in her life
her and her cargo
he almost loved her
in spite of himself

She’d never seemed much
of a daughter type —
too wilful before
pregnancy changed her
to something more like

Birth one winter night
brought Grandfatherhood
her once-only gift
that child/mother split
saw attention shift

The newborn dubbed him
Grandaddy status
a role cast to fit
vehicle empty
her long road trip done
