Wallflower (Poetry)

22nd April 2019
There comes a time when the party slows
and the ride comes to an end
all the wine’s consumed and the top pop tunes
fade out as the farewells send

a ripple across the heart’s blue sea
where the tide tugs dreams below
and brave hopes that sailed and survived the gale
can’t resist that undertow

There’s little doubt when the evening’s lost
having watched the rest have fun —
how they slipped upstairs in their giggling pairs
and the naughty deed was done

But it’s late and the darkness waits outside
long shadows will follow her home
in her skin-tight dress she gives up the quest
leaves the same way she came — alone
