What Can I Say? (Poetry)

25th September 2022
What can I say about Susan?
She’s vanished — her things are all gone
not a note — not a sign she was leaving
and I haven’t a clue what I’ve done

Of late she has been kind of moody
I thought it a phase nothing more
and maybe we’d talk when she’s ready
just a quiet heart-to-heart like before

I guess all young girls have their secrets
but I thought we were close — it’s a shock
I’ve been sitting all night in the silence
the soft grind of her key haunts the lock

So what do I tell nosy neighbours?
I dread every satisfied smile
Just what can I say about Susan?
single mothers are hung without trial

Oh it’s not an original story
picking up the dropped threads I’ll go on
much wiser for knowing the stranger
that once shared my life is now gone
