What I Thought I would (Poetry)

What I thought I would
do today is this
item off the list
of those things I wish
I’d had the time for

Naturally they’re not
very practical
but more fanciful
indulgencies — a
game of ‘let’s pretend’

I wind back the film
to another life
and magic up
myself as a wife —
star of a sitcom

It’s a ditzy dream
foolish-fancy-wise
as I spend my time
painting pretty eyes
blonding grey-streaked hair

Yet the chores get done
dinner’s on the dot
roses scent the air
and for once there’s not
a clock — anywhere
