What the Heart Wants (Poetry)
20th March 2016
It happened oh so suddenly! —
the warm wind turned ice-cold
the flower wilted in my hand
the mirror showed me old.
I went to look for life’s lost love
but couldn’t find a trace —
the years had left too many lines
to recognise his face.
Regret hung pale as a sad ghost
and chances I had missed
mocked still more — remembering
how long since last we kissed ...
Such tragic romance swamped my mind
’til logic forced strict truth —
it wasn’t love I wished restored
my heart yearned most for youth.
the warm wind turned ice-cold
the flower wilted in my hand
the mirror showed me old.
I went to look for life’s lost love
but couldn’t find a trace —
the years had left too many lines
to recognise his face.
Regret hung pale as a sad ghost
and chances I had missed
mocked still more — remembering
how long since last we kissed ...
Such tragic romance swamped my mind
’til logic forced strict truth —
it wasn’t love I wished restored
my heart yearned most for youth.
