What's In A Name (Poetry)
17th March 2019
John Lennon’s alive
and he’s living in Belgium
he knows that the media
think he’s long-dead
but it’s better that way
for he works in a bakery
mixing the dough
for the monk’s daily bread
He sings as he works
but nobody hears him
he whistles the tunes
from the sixties’ pop chart
he has no regrets
for nobody mentioned
the bullet that missed him
found some other heart
The legend’s alive
though he’s old and forgetful
the village is quiet
and folk leave him alone
he talks to the birds
and he tells them he’s Elvis
for that is the name
they will carve on his stone
and he’s living in Belgium
he knows that the media
think he’s long-dead
but it’s better that way
for he works in a bakery
mixing the dough
for the monk’s daily bread
He sings as he works
but nobody hears him
he whistles the tunes
from the sixties’ pop chart
he has no regrets
for nobody mentioned
the bullet that missed him
found some other heart
The legend’s alive
though he’s old and forgetful
the village is quiet
and folk leave him alone
he talks to the birds
and he tells them he’s Elvis
for that is the name
they will carve on his stone
