When The Lights Go Out (Poetry)
31st August 2025
All left in the dark
when they come and cut
the poor man’s power
without light or heat
stuck in some tower
where the lifts won’t work
and the phone’s gone dead
the freezer defrosts
no point getting up —
it’s warmer in bed
No TV to watch
no one at the door
the old and infirm
helpless by the score
trapped in their own homes
Where’s the ‘homehelp’ now?
It’s hit them the same —
no fuel for their cars
the newspapers blame
‘those bloody Russians!’
It’s said that God helps
those that help themselves
the rich man’s okay
his company shelves
sagging with candles
when they come and cut
the poor man’s power
without light or heat
stuck in some tower
where the lifts won’t work
and the phone’s gone dead
the freezer defrosts
no point getting up —
it’s warmer in bed
No TV to watch
no one at the door
the old and infirm
helpless by the score
trapped in their own homes
Where’s the ‘homehelp’ now?
It’s hit them the same —
no fuel for their cars
the newspapers blame
‘those bloody Russians!’
It’s said that God helps
those that help themselves
the rich man’s okay
his company shelves
sagging with candles
