Where Have You Come From? (Poetry)
09th September 2012
You were not here yesterday —
there was no place set at the table —
no space for you — no gap
in thought or conversation
where you might fit.
It is as though both air and life itself —
the close rhythms of the humdrum day to day
parted just enough to let you through
then moulded seamlessly around
to hold you naturally.
But — please explain —
Where have you come from? —
And was your entrance timed
to coincide with some great cosmic tide? —
Or wish fulfilment —
drawn by pure desire?
My muse unpicks the logic — she builds
a dizzy dream of clouds to sift —
vague thoughts to ponder on...
You have your easy chair to suit your frame
dented deep like it was always so
but yesterday — last month — last year
I lived without knowing you —
your origin — your name.
So tell me — please — I have to ask again —
where have you come from?
there was no place set at the table —
no space for you — no gap
in thought or conversation
where you might fit.
It is as though both air and life itself —
the close rhythms of the humdrum day to day
parted just enough to let you through
then moulded seamlessly around
to hold you naturally.
But — please explain —
Where have you come from? —
And was your entrance timed
to coincide with some great cosmic tide? —
Or wish fulfilment —
drawn by pure desire?
My muse unpicks the logic — she builds
a dizzy dream of clouds to sift —
vague thoughts to ponder on...
You have your easy chair to suit your frame
dented deep like it was always so
but yesterday — last month — last year
I lived without knowing you —
your origin — your name.
So tell me — please — I have to ask again —
where have you come from?
